CENSUS INFORMATION
The Census is taken every 10 years, and lists all persons present at every address in England and Wales on Census Day. Our extract is from the latest available, 1901 census. The listing is not the complete listing for Spennymoor, although our aim is to have the complete census info on the site sometime in the future.
The information is updated regularly, so please don't forget to come back and check. If you have any information you would like to add pleasecontact uswith the relevant info. If you have hard copies or scans we will transcribe the information.
DIRECTORY LISTINGS
* You can now search the Directories click here:SEARCHThere are over 5,800 entries in the database.
Directories were very similar to the Phone Book or Yellow Pages (without numbers!), containing listings of tradespeople and private residents. Names are listed in alphabetical order along with trades (where appropriate) and addresses.
The directories paint an accurate picture of the town at a specific point in time. Look out for businesses that are still in operation today - e.g. Deftys.
Even if you think your ancestors were not 'commercial' people, it's still worth looking in the directories as even the smallest of trades were listed. Officials of clubs, institutes etc. are also contained within the listings. If you have any information you would like to add pleasecontact uswith the relevant info. If you have hard copies or scans we will transcribe the information.
